Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative featuring angels, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the first table of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to embark on their own adventure, distinct from the additional parties.

This warrior group includes the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Given an extensive roster, it was evident from the beginning that keeping everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Introduction, weaving together the personal journeys before branching into three separate parties: Soldiers, Strategists, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

According to the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for participants who enjoy a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven narrative style where diplomatic options are rare.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might appear unsuited, but the actions of the latest installment show why these five characters are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the party has a clear idea where to go next after a violent initial meeting with the antagonists.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—manipulated the foes for his personal gain, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, striking the rogue, and swiping all the enchanted items to sell off.

The antagonist then cleared his liabilities and fled to a fortified location in the northern region, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each character has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, seeks retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The warrior and The healer, having resisted his family’s wishes to kill Teor and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their position as key figures in the influential clan could enable the team enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a eternal obligation to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that govern Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The rogue and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and Wicander betrayed House Halovar and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the family.

This means them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in search of Casimir.

What’s Next?

From episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the combat party will not appear next week, leaving the rest of the participants to round up the Questers and Planners tables.

Audiences can look forward to discovering which players will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, released on next week.
